Primary Classroom
3 - 6 year olds
The primary environment is based on the belief that children learn best through movement and work with their hands, and provides cognitive, social, and emotional support to help them reach their full potential.
On entering the classroom there is much that welcomes the child and helps them to feel at home. Procedural Movement lessons show the child how to interact with the objects in the environment while the lessons in Grace and Courtesy give the child information on how to interact with others. Giving direct lessons in these areas provides the child with the opportunity to feel their own secure function in their new community. In their use of the materials children make discoveries, use critical thinking, gain independence, and develop a life long love of learning.
In a Montessori environment, liberty is one of the most important and fundamental principals. This is not absolute freedom but freedom within limits. As educators, our goal is to help children develop control of their actions. The child who attains mastery of their actions is able to achieve inner discipline. This true discipline coupled with a desire to care for one’s self and the environment leads to true change in the world.
